I wonder if there's something inherently wrong with collie teeth. Every collie I've seen in the groom shop (even shelties) has had bad teeth. Especially for its age. I got a sheltie in a couple of weeks ago that was 4 years old and it looked like it should have every tooth in its head pulled they were so bad. Even if you don't take care of your dog's teeth at all, they shouldn't be that bad by 4. I'm talking- loose, SOFT, rotten, falling out of the gums BAD! Took hours to get the smell out of my brain. Which got us wondering if those breeds are prone to dental issues. I have seen it in every rough collie and sheltie I've groomed, haven't had a smooth collie yet to investigate.

Does anyone remember the Ibezan hound from a few years back named "Bunny"? I loved that dog! She got her nickname from the white patch on her rump that was shaped like a playboy bunny

Oh yeah, that dog had such a pretty face! She is beautiful!
My favorite was the free-stacking doberman from a few years ago.. I forget the name completely. But that dog was amazing! The expression in the face gave me chills. Such a striking animal!

When it comes to describing the dogs, they sometimes say things like "this dog lives on a farm, real working dog here" but I always thought show dogs were like kept in a bubble. How in the world does a herding dog look so perfectly white and groomed? Can show dogs really be working dogs as well?
A few, yes. But they are more often the exception to the rule.
I know with Border Collies, show dogs have essentially become a different breed.

The opening night is being reshown today a couple of times. I'm watching it right now (6-9am in WA) and it's on again at noon, I think.

I love watching Westminster. (So do a couple of my dogs!)
I marvel at the amazing variety people have created in dogs. However I refuse to believe that Pekingese are even canine.
Interesting article in the NYT today about some of the rarest breeds --Otterhounds, Harriers, Field Spaniels--some of these breeds only have a few hundred individual dogs in this country, and a few hundred more in England. And that's it. The Otterhound last night was the only one at the show.

The ACD is a nice dog. He was bred by a friend of mine and is co-owned by another friend. Nice ball drive and a good temperment. One of the few specials I would even consider breeding to and that says a lot about how much I like this dog.

I remember pouring over my 1980 AKC Dog Breeds book as a kid, finding the Otterhound to be beautiful and fascinating. Also loved the Irish Water Spaniel.
Have to agree with Tracy about the peke. I found one wandering the streets about 10 years ago, and when I reunited the dog with owners and they told me it was a peke I was amazed. Looked nothing like a "real" peke.

I pride myself on the versatility of my dogs. This weekend Frost and I will be in Denver for a huge show and will be competing in not only breed but utility as well. Here is a video from a couple of years ago of Frost going from winning breed several days in the show ring to training in obedience/bitework:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fGQTE3gnY3A
Keeping a coat in show condition varies by the breed. Keeping a show dog's coat in good condition might take a little work but it can be done. The Rough Collie in the herding group is herding titled and his dam has advanced herding titles.
As for white, my Frost has a predominantly white tail and it has never been an issue keeping it white. I bath her before shows with a whitening shampoo but other than that, I don't do anything special. My dogs are house dogs though. Some of the breeds like corgis and shelties "chalk" the white parts to make them look even whiter.
Can't play the vid on my phone for some reason, but as soon as my hubby is awake (he worked night shift last night) ill go upstairs and watch in on my comp. I think its really great you have such well rounded dogs! Can't wait to see you and frost on tv someday!

I love Ibezan hounds, and some of the other rare breeds as well.
To me the Boston terriers head looked smaller than most of the ones I see with people.
I am also going to do some research to learn about the differences in the Belgium Shepherds/Malinois.
The black Belgium was stunning IMO.
