Lets think about the good things. Progress has been made.
There are rescue communities. There are foster homes. Pups leave shelters castrated and spayed, and while that may be tough on their joints, it's great for pet over-population. There are a few laws in a number of places that squash puppy mills, at least the worst ones. You've got Pedigree advertising for 2 days straight about adopting a shelter dog. Cesar Milan on TV to give folks a clue that a dog is a thinking, feeling being who can be managed as opposed to dumped.
Euthanasia in a terrified or mean dog does not always go well, especially if people are rushing. There are a lot of fear biting mean dogs that end up in shelters, that's why they are IN the shelter. But, for the most part the end goes well, the techs are super-capable, and pre-medication is used when it's needed.
I agree 100% with Phaedra, do not worry about euthanasia, if it's something you need to do, in capable hands it is smooth, and it is mercy.

That dog in the photo looks so much like Vincent and so easily could have been. It's haunted me all night.

So many of the facebook photos just break my heart, especially the seniors. How the hell do you have a dog for 8 or 10 years and then dump them at the "shelter"???? It just leaves me wiping away tears.

There is absolutely no place I could/would move to or any job or individual (family or otherwise) that would ever tell me I couldn't have my animals.
I'd live in a barn to keep them. I'd feed them before I'd feed myself. I already know who my dogs would go to if something were to happen to me and my husband.
And I would take any pet - dog, cat, horse, whatever, from any good friend or family member to save that animal - even if it turned in to a life long stay with me.
There is absolutely nothing that would separate me from my animals.

I have seen a situation like that picture. It was extremely sad because the dog came in as the result of a foreclosure. The owners both left in tears. He showed no hint of aggresion at that time.
This is what I don't get. As a very last resort, why wouldn't a person have their dog euthanized instead? I guess I know why. They can't bring themselves to do it. But if you took on the responsibility of owning the dog, it is far kinder to the dog to have them euthanized instead of dropping them off in a shelter where they get to live for 3-7 days in misery before they are euthanized.
Of course personally I'd be living in a tent with my dogs.

Here's a little euthanasia 101 for those of you that have never witnessed a perfectly healthy, scared animal being "put down" .....
For anyone struggling with having to put your elderly or sick, loved pet to sleep, this IS NOT euthanasia 101.
I want to emphasize this.
The PTS in an understaffed overcrowded shelter (which they all are, just about) has NOTHING to do with the PTS we do for our best friend to release him or her from a diseased or broken body.
PLEASE don't even think of it as the same thing. It's NOT. Like many (or most) of us, I have been there, done that, and am not simply murmuring soothing platitudes.
If you are thinking about the time to let your beloved dog go, put these thoughts and pictures out of your mind and heart and read some of the many threads we have here about the peaceful and loving experience that you are contemplating.
To the OP: I do understand and empathize with your intention.

Mara, that was what I was going to post last night. If I had nobody else to take my dog that I trusted, I would have him put down. If I die, I have always written in my will who I specifically want to my pets, or that they should be euthanized, regardless of their age or health. I have taken responsibility to provide a good life for him, and I would not want that to include a shelter or a home where he was miserable.
