I use a light weight nylon mountaineering/climbing line. You can get it by the foot at an outdoor sports store. There are different widths. You can also get flat or round woven. The nylon never gets wet and I have never gotten rope burn. You do have to either knot it on a clip or otherwise attach it by sewing or stapling. I've never had mine fail - I used rivets to attach it to a caribiner.
Anyway, it is great for dragging through the forest, swamp, snowy trail or muddy trail. Cleans up great.
I use a old climbing rope. Once it's too old to rely on for falls, it's PERFECT for lines and leashes. That said, go to REI if you've got one near you. They have all sorts of lines/ropes, sold by the foot. Ask them for whatever length you like. Then ask for the smallest locking carabiner they have. I'm sure you'll find a super helpful, rock-climbing employee who'd be happy to tie a knot for ya. Just explain what you're using it for, and they'll tie 2 knots. One for weight bearing, and a second as a back up.
I will personally guarantee these knots will NOT come undone. They will not fail, if you find a climber at the store to tie them.
Ask for a figure 8 knot, backed up with a double or triple overhand knot. It'll be perfect!
