These people advising you to put your dog to sleep for no serious reason... I'm exagerating, but similarly, they must commit suicide if they were, say, sportsmen, and got some disease so they couldn't work any more. People don't even kill themselves for getting the cancer. Instead, they learn to live with it.
I think this dog needs caring and medical treatment, not death. He can live a long happy life as a pet, I am thinking of those dogs on 3 legs that simply take it as it is. About its growling, it sounds like 'what the *, please take care, it hurts'.
I don't know if all the dogs are alike: I had 2 dogs suffering from uncurable diseases that spent years under treatment and became more and more nice, cooperating, and grateful for the whole care; no growling just asking for help and bearing massage, tablets, injections, whatever, in such a way that made me feel ashamed - I would certainly complain so much if I were them.

This may be a little off subject, but I couldn't help but notice that the dog is about 150 lbs (???)Unless this is an exaggeration (and most people do tend to exaggerate their dog's weight)I can't imagine a pure-bred GSD weighing 150 lbs without being grossly overweight, which could exacerbate or even contribute to his arthritis, expecially if he is used as a working dog.

Thanks, VanCamp!

Renee I didn't put the right puncuation in my sentence, I guess. This is the correct thought I was trying to relay. "He wasn't must bigger then his dog." Just coming from Vet the dog was weighed he was barely over 100lbs.
The man was 150 lbs the lady was probably 102lbs, the dog was 105lbs, I think it said. I lifted him after making a muzzle, to get in their SUV he felt every bit of that.
He also felt well muscled and his coat was in great shape. He seemed to be a very fit and able dog, with excepection of his new illiness.
Sorry for the error in puncuations.

(vancamp blushing so much that people in his office are looking at him and suspect he is choking to death, strangely nobody is running into my office to help. . .they just snicker??)
This thread needs to be put down! Don don't start stupid threads like this anymore. . .it drags down the whole board.
We are talking about a dog that nobody here knows, only one joker has seen in passing, and who's vet has already addressed his problem?
People. . .I mean come on! You don't put a dog down because he starts to slow down a little. . .WTF!!

VanCamp
I'm not one of them but there are people that feel that a dog should be put down if he can't work anymore.
I was just polling the poplus here known for serious dog workers, if this was a accepted method.
No one really stepped up to the plate in agreement with the trainer, that I think just wanted to sell a pup.
From this board I got information that some dogs can keep working past this illness if their drive is strong enough and with medication, their condition improves.
Overall its been pretty informative, most agree he would still make a good pet, even if he has to stop working.
But like old retired cops, its hard watch a crime go do without getting involved. I bet he would still respond to a threat/attack on his owners.

I would hate to admit how many old kenneled Working Terriers are taken on that one last hunt because they are to old to work in the earth. The people that do this don't invite me on digs anymore. I've expressed my thoughts to them to many times.

Bob You see that in a lot of working dogs, in police dogs if they can't be placed or one man dogs and the Policeman/Security officer retires the dog is disposed of.
You also see in the Guard dog that property has gone under or out of business. It has no other purpose in life.
Its almost a tradition in the bull terrier trade if a dog loses/won't or can't work (as they call it) he no good, and disposed of.
