This is a great post. Lauren I have been thinking about getting a backpack for my male and your post has really peaked my curiosity.
(this is strange because I posted a reply earlier and now it is gone. ?? Anyhow, the post said you bought a ruffwear but I forget the name of your backpack.? I wonder where that went also?

I'm posting from my phone right now, so I can't copy and paste a link. I got the pack from sitstay.com. Its the ruffwear approach pack.
The pallisades pack was the one originaly reccomended to me here, but it was out of my price range. I have to say that I am very happy with the quality and fit of the product. Its very nice.

My GSD has the same reaction to wearing a backpack. Totally gives him focus. He's usually a pretty laid back goofball showline dog--but wearing a back pack he turns into "working dog." It's pretty funny.
I think there may be two things going on: wearing the pack gives the sense of having a "job" to do. And the torso compression of the pack itself provides a calming effect (the Temple Grandin squeeze machine concept.)

I used to get the same way in my motorcycle gear, I felt like a real bad-ass :P
Lauren thanks for the tip--I have looked at the more expensive one before, but I had never seen the more reasonably priced version you bought. I think I'll likely buy one or the other when the time comes.
Can I assume you got the biggest size for your lovely lady?

Sold! I am looking at backpacks today.

Very interesting Tracy, I can't wait to give this backpack a try.

If you're considering overnight backpacking trips, stuff like that- I'd defiantly get the Palisade! I can fit TONS of stuff in it, it's amazing. That said, for a walk, it's really bigger then we need.
The biggest difference (and main selling point for me) is that the Palisade pack has removable saddle bags. The harness can be left on the dog.
IMO the sizing is very flexible, and with the Palisade at least, the size I would buy would depend on my use for it. Koenig is 85lbs, and deep chested, he can squeeze into a size small harness and pack. It's great for walks, and short day hikes. Overnight trips, and multi-day hikes make me pull out the Large. It's HUGE, and even with the straps to tighten it down it's bulky.

I have 4! 2 size smalls (Saras normal, Koenig's day-pack) 1 medium (Sara's long-trip pack), and a size large (Koenig's long-trip pack).
The 2 smalls belonged to my other half's last dogs. We've only purchased the M and the L recently, but it's still a lot of money to invest in packs. Worth it though, IMO.

Oh I see.
This opens up a new can of worms. Multiple doggy packs? Removable saddlebags? Different sizes?

I only like to have different sizes because of the different uses they have for us- we're a backpacking family- and go out on multiple 5 day trips during the summer. Having additional space to make the dog carry his own food for 5 days really can make or break my back (literally!)
The Palisade pack having removable saddlebags is a great feature to have while backpacking. You can upclip the pack from your dog, let him take a break, or go for a swim in the river, then just clip the pack back on! AMAZING. Much easier then harnessing my dog up again, when I've got my own 40lb pack to worry about. An additional feature of the Palisade pack is that it has water bladders built in. I don't think any of the other RuffWear pack do.
If you're just using the pack for extra weight while on a walk, the approach would probably do just fine for you. If you're considering long trips, I'd save and splurge on the Palisade. But hey, thats just me. All of the RuffWear packs are QUALITY dog gear. Much nicer then any of the other brands I've used.
