First of all, great job with the baby! Sounds like he's doing great!
Many people use a crate pad or mat, which they can bring along with them when they go places. Leslie McDevitt actually uses a mat (portable "place") in her protocol for conditioning sensitive dogs.
Do you have a pad, blanket, mat in his current crate? You could get a matching one and it might make the process of conditioning him easier. If not, you can acquire two matching ones, place one in his crate and the second nearby (if he's not one to chew up his bedding) and go from there.
And, like Aaron mentioned, there are also really cheap "pop up" style fabric crates which are extremely portable (they fold up to frisbee size). However, this crate is very different from what he is accustomed to and will require some conditioning as well before taking it on the road.
