Kelly - maybe she doesn't know of anywhere else or anything else to do with her dog? My mallie does not have toy drive and boy have I tried - balls, tugs, even bought the tug from LB that holds treats (used to work for my agility dog) but he is hyper food motivated! So, I work with food, always as we are still overcoming some issues. Just because he's a mal doesn't mean he will do sch - which I have realized - he is show and obed bred. I have the fortunate case of having a large obedience club in Phx to work with. Monday nights over 200 dogs on the field at one time doing various levels of obedience. Maybe you could help her find something like that and give her a flyer or something without making any insinuations about her dog. Then she'd move on and maybe excel at something else?

Something to do and be active with her dogs. Hey! That's a good thing.
After all that's what most are there for. It's a reasonable goal in of itself. Don't you think?
Yes!!!! Exactly!
The TD got a lesson too huh? Was he bitten bad? Time to show the handler how to post up and protect the decoy I'd say (watch the dog even while (trying to) listening to directions). But the decoy should have known better. Stuff like that does happen though, Strider has almost nailed my decoy a couple of times (he doesn't take those liberties with Strider any longer), but no one thought it was that big of a deal......shrug, when one plays with dogs ya know.
Don't freeze her out. Keep welcoming her into the club and let her move along at her own pace.
He was not bitten bad- she didn't break skin. Handler is not... handling... her well. She knows her dog is unpredictable, she should be wary of those situations. TD also got a reminder not to turn his back on her... lol.
I'm definitely not going to freeze her out. That won't solve anything. I just wish she'd be more open minded, it's reactions like that, which make the new folks thing it's not worth staying for. Ya know what I mean? I LOVE to watch other people train, and learn from their mistakes. She could learn lots by watching, and taking in new ideas.

She might not know of anything else to do- but as terrible as it sounds, I'm done offering ideas to this gal.
I totally agree. Just because a dogs breed says he should be a 'working' dog... there are lots of GSD's out there that will never make a sport dog. Same with Mal's, and even (gosh, I hate to admit it...) DS's! Some just don't have the drive/nerves to handle it. Thats fine, they can still make excellent pets.
Thats crazy big! Woah!!! I'd go crazy! lol.

My previous GSD had no food or toy drive, pretty much zilch, and yes we worked on it. Got him to the point that when the ball was thrown, his eyes would at least move. He was able to get his CGC and TD certification, and discovered he had a very natural herding instinct. Perhaps this sport is stressing him out.

Could be- but there is not much 'sport' in it for this particular dog. They try to heel, may attempt a track, and might possibly go over the jump if it's set at a foot.
*shrug*
Good job figuring out your boy!!!!!! Yay!!!!!!!!!

Kelly - I'll have to send you a pic or post one of this club. They actually offer 7 pm and 8:15 lesson times but I go at 7 so don't know how many dogs show up at the later time. Some of the classes are so large they have to divide them. They start with kindergarten classes for puppies and go clear up thru tracking, agility (trains separate as does tracking), conformation class training, etc. All breeds, plus mix breeds and it's cheap - $40 for first set of 6 weeks, next 6 with same dog is $30, then $20 thereafter. They do practice run thrus in a ring for dogs headed to shows. I figure if my dog can work and behave under this kind of distraction, then I have a trained dog!

Crazy. I have enough of an issue getting Koenig to hold a down stay if someone is playing tug/fetch within in a 500'' ft radius. God forbid they do protection work.

Yeah, I ran my club like a tyrant when I was the training director, but ya'll can ask Betty, injuries or incidents were few and far between ( and usually occurred on the days that I couldn't make it, go figure.
Safety first, both for the dog and handler, has to be the constant mantra for all club members - no exceptions equals no injuries.

The world needs more tyrants like you, Will. I bet training with your club was awesome!
