Could I also ask what kind of a choice a sport dog would be? Maybe more the obedience type? IDK if I would be ready for a schutzhund type, since I've been told to steer clear of protection dogs. Even if the PPD is not right, what would the experts suggest beyond my little guy? I have always loved GSD's but there are so many types! It isn't like an Aussie, where they herd and catch frisbies only. (not that that is bad; I thuroughly enjoy mine) Maybe this is a little off topic, but I will try.

I would worry that you also don't have access to a good trainer
You were right on this one. I would have to travel at least 200 miles to find a decent club. That would be doable once a month, but it may require more than that.

Aussies do FAR more than just herd and play frisbee - they are actually a very versatile breed. My opinion is find a breed that suits you and then find a good breeder that you mesh with (as well as their dogs). It sounds like you really like GSDs - go visit Schutzhund clubs and other dog clubs/events. Get involved as much as you can. It is always overwhelming when getting involved in a new breed but if you do your homework like you are doing right here, you should have no problem finding the right breed, the right breeder, and the right dog :-) Good luck!
I knew they were different, I just didn't know if the intense drive I would think schutzhund requires would fit in the same category. Is it more of a "leave it on the field" attitude? The sport is amazing to watch! Love the pic on the link. That is really neat!

I wouldnt exclude looking for a good German Shepherd Amy. The one in my pic is fun sportdog and great with my 3 kids. He's at work with me every day and completely social with everyone.
I'm one like Aaron and Steve that has a sport dog, who also lives happily with 2 kids. (3 & 6) http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b400/turnnburn52984/Koenig/IMG_0203.jpg
I want to rephrase that... he's a happy family member, with proper exercise. If I don't get him out enough, he's bouncing off walls (literally) and running over kids. Koenig is a promising sport dog, but is JUST starting to bark/growl at the door when someone knocks. He is about as unaggressive as they get (right Aaron?!) but has a good watch command which is fairly intimidating.
I'm glad you are reconsidering your desire for a PPD... you may be able to find exactly what your looking for from a quality breeder if you tell them your needs. There are people who breed sport/working dogs, who have pups in the litter that are a bit lower drive, and more suitable for a pet home.
