No, just the wiry composition of the tug's handle now that he ripped it apart a bit. When it was normal, no issues because all the force he was generating was more evenly distributed. See what I mean?
Targeting. See what I mean?
Giving the dog a target. See what I mean?
What are you training towards? See what I mean?
Is the dog hectic? See what I mean?
All the tugs in the world aren't going to help if we don't get some answers to what in the hell is going on.
Connie--I won't really have any until I take him to the trainer Konnie recommended for an evaluation. I think they'll have a better idea of what he can/should be doing than I will. I've seen how deluded people get about their dogs/kids and have been consciously trying to avoid that trap. I don't plan on competing unless it is made clear to me that the best way to give the dog a happy, fulfilled life is to go that way.
Randy, there's not much to tell. Just a novice playing tug with his low-to-medium-drive Mal, looking for some equipment to handle the dog as he gets bigger, stronger, older. Is he 'hectic'? I am probably missing the contextual meaning of that word (kind of like 'possessive' perhaps?), but he is a 9-month-old male Malinois with intact jewels...so, yeah, a little bit.
Am I getting bit? No. My hands hurt because the handle on my one intact tug is so frayed that it digs into my skin when he is tugging on the actual body of the tug. Is that more clear? Sorry.
Sports generally involve bite training. Not every dog is cut out for bite training, and if you push the wrong dog into something like that, they can break down. At least, this is the message I have been seeing from this community since I joined it.
I am not going to trust my own opinion on this. Like, maybe the dog is just not cut out for anything aside from taking apart tugs and going on hikes. In that case I'll buy Ed's tracking DVD and some leather scent articles and be on my way. Or maybe he's a bulletproof decoy-killer and I just don't know it.
Ana, I do wear gloves and use handcreme. I also work out. But thanks. What I'm 'waiting for' is finding someone I trust to evaluate the dog objectively.
