...so question -we've been working on the long downs too -but I was told to always go back and get the dog -so she won't even think about breaking...is the recall off a down a Schutzhund thing or needed elsewhere??
I had one of mine, when he was young, get figgity, shiffting his weight & wiggling his feet, but he never actualy crawled, but he still managed to move a bit out of posiiton on a long down, due to the figgiting, which was unacceptable. The crawl would have been easier to fix, I think. Of course this was only when he was in a down way out in the field 1 1/2 acres away from me. Up closer, he was perfect & would stay there for 1/2 hour, while I walked the perimiter of the field. Even major distractions were never an issue, it was the way biger distance for him. Even 20 feet closer, he was fine. Just something in his head, I guess about that few extra feet. But hey, that's why god created e-collars. For him,(a soft dog) just the vibrate on the collar, reminded him that I was still 'in touch' & he should stay down & still.
For him it was never the recall itself that was the issue. He is a bit of a hectic dog & staying still was not easy for him.

Its real situational to them, I think Hilarie. Even though Platz is Platz, the recall comes from a down in motion so the lead up tips them to whats coming. For the long down, yeah, you always go back to them. That was what I did to stop the creeping with Chaos, different amount of steps, turn back suddenly and surprise him, reward him at that spot.
I always end the long down with having him sit and heel slowly a few steps before release.
I'm not sure if any other sports do a recall out of a down, But I don't think anything in AKC does.
