I probably shouldn't be posting on something I know nothing about but just caught this and had hubby take a look.
He says the hollow box acts somewhat like a filter. The air comes in from outside and if rocks or stuff get sucked in they settle in the bottom of the box rather than get sucked into the engine. Says it’s kind of a “catch” for anything large or heavy before it goes to the actual air filter.

I think. That's sort of what he said.
I didn't know it had a rock-catcher purpose, but that totally makes sense. I thought it was just a kind of "holding tank" for the outside air to be moved in at a rate depending on the temp sensor.
But my understanding of it is very vague.
Kinda like "and the music goes 'round and 'round, and it comes out here ...."
This all started over the "check engine" light, the dealer said it was the EGR valve, I took it to a mechanic who put the diagnostic computer on it and confirmed the EGR fault and was told a new one was about eighty bucks. The valve does nothing for engine performance. I pulled the valve, cleaned it up, it looked good and diaphram had no leaks. Replaced the dry hoses but the light still would not go out. Started chasing wires and found a damaged wire on a module. Repaired wire and idiot light went out and truck still starts.
