He has a really good point. Regardless of whatever else you do, the most important thing to remember is that you need to show this pup that the threats don't work at all. Ever.
If it were my dog, I might not smack her, but I would make a point to never flinch or react with emotion to the growling or snapping. Not even a blink. Even if I got bit. Be as cool as possible and show her that it will never work.
About a month after I got Missy she was chewing on a bone (gave her a smoked bone before I knew better) it started to splinter so I went to take it away from her. She growled. I grabbed her muzzle and said "NO!!" then picked up the bone, let go of her muzzle and threw the bone pieces away.
I don't tend to recommend doing this because if you're not sure about it/confident, you can get bit. But I never had another issue taking anything away from her. No issues with any other sort of resource guarding either.
One of my Shih Tzus didn't want to go outside when it was time & hid under a table. When I reached under to get her, she growled/snapped at me.
She only did it ONE time. Because I 'explained' to her in no uncertain terms that it was TOTALLY unacceptable and she STILL got (gently) tossed outside on her booty!
