I use a product named Sentinel (May through Oct) It is formulated to prevent Heartworm disease (HW now I know...) and Flea populations.
If you live in the midwest you should be using it all year round!
I could do that no prob, but I was under the impression that it is not needed during the cold, non-mosquito months. In my area that would be roughly Oct to April.
Great info on preventing heartworm in the above article.
I live in Michigan and give HW meds starting in the beginning of May. How long I give it into the fall depends on how warm it stays, usually October, sometimes November.
Keep in mind that HW prevention meds are designed to kill young larva that has already infected your dog, so when you give a pill, it is really treating the PREVIOUS month
Also from the mitten state, SE area...it's nice to finally be able to grill and sit out by the fire pit at night. At least until May when the damaging Thunderstorms roll through and knock out the power. Every year I say to myself "buy that damn generator" LOL!
SE here too...supposed to be 79 today and looks like the rain is going to stay north of me! Getting my house cleaning done early while it is still foggy and it's going to be all about the dogs later.
I have always used Heartgard, but my vet is offering something new this year. Same stuff as Heartgard (pyrantel & ivermectin), but its called Tri-heart Plus...substantially cheaper, which is very important when I have four dogs to buy meds for!

Edit reason: wrong name
FWIW, last year I asked my vet for a prescription so that I could buy a generic (Iverhart) from an online pharmacy. I used Valley Vet supply and was very happy with the service and cost (just over $3/pill instead of $6/pill from the vet). If I just had one dog or my vet offered a generic, I'd still buy from my vet, but with 3 dogs I was looking for a way to save some money.
If memory serves me correctly, my vet said that I needed to use a non-Ivermectin based product like Sentinel because Ivermectin can be toxic to Collies???
