LOL on the neighbors opinions little do they know that the dogs love the process and I'll bet your dogs are the best behaved on the block because of it!!
Mine happily work for kibble - I take full advantage of it!!

When to stop puppy kibble is a big debate. The breeder my dog came from said to have her off of puppy food at twelve weeks. I found California Natural lamb and rice to be a decent, affordable food that my dog tolerated well. She had lots of stomach upset from other foods when she was young.
Of course, raw feeding is always an excellent choice, too.

Sigh...only adopt the problem ones. On the list of "100 Things To Accomplish," 'Best Behaved' is #101. But wouldn't trade it for anything in the world.
CONGRATS on the 1000 posts! And look at that Barbara...so shamelessly taking the credit. (I wonder what kind of treat she would like!) :-)

Raw diet. Never attempted it; read a bit out of curiousity. At least outwardly, it seemed that it had its learning curves, but that, perhaps, came through a combination of looking at it with virgin eyes and the fact that with anything off-the-beaten path, it can look intimidating. There also seems to be two distinct camps (much like with anything else): it's the best thing that you could do for your dog's diet vs. it's the worst thing that you could do.
With my limited knowledge, it would seem that raw, with trusted sources, isn't a death sentance. If I was given the choice between feeding only raw or only (I won't mention specific brands), I would certainly go raw.

I hope that you will have your friend join so that we might see photos of this baby Cane and follow its development.
If your friend cannot afford to do raw or fancy kibble (some people might not be able to afford it for a big dog) I would feed an adult dog kibble, a national brand, and not a variety with fancy colors or shapes, as these are just sugar/food coloring and more of a marketing
thing than nutrition that the dog needs.
I have found that my dog, who can be tough, is more even tempered when he eats raw food than he is when he eats kibble.

It isn't the source of the food which makes a raw diet possible or safe, but rather the speed in which raw meat and bones moves through the dog's gut. This isn't to say that you would deliberately feed rancid or rotting meat, but you would probably be surprised at how capable a dog's digestive tract is at handling some pretty "ripe" items...

Betty, this is amazing. Of all the benefits I've read and seen with my own eyes of feeding raw, I've never heard this! You obvisously feel confident the change you noticed was diet related? Any idea what might have been in the kibble which was having an adverse effect? (Don't mean to pepper you with questions!)

Occasionally I run out of raw food,(e.g. I cook the chicken I bought for the dog for us ! ) and feed Iams, which is what I give my ancient IG.
We really almost never give him bagged dog food any more - we feed eggs or tuna or something else.
Actually, lately he has been getting so much exercise that I'm not certain I could tell.
After a raw meal, he sleeps. After a grain meal, he sleeps a little, then he's up again.
He's really never had any prolonged kibble feeding, some the first few weeks of life with us, but I was on the Forum pretty early and feeding some sort of meat
from a very young age. Lots of eggs, cooked, too.
