Ahh....now that's a good question - what do people do with their dogs after they exercise them?
I'm guessing that different owners have different answers for that. My dogs are out on a rotation basis ( some out in the pens, some inside, some crated ) depending on the time of day.
I'd hope that folks who kept their dogs crated during the day while they were at work would have their dogs out after they got home. If the dogs weren't totally trustworthy, or had bad habits, like trying to eat the cats ( BAD Fetz!! ) they just need to be keep within eye sight while they're out.
I would think that long term crating would really de-condition a dog physically if the dog spent more than 12 hours total a day, including sleeping at night.
I have a 6,000 square foot house and guess how much of it the dog utilizes? He follows me or another family member around. If I sat in a 10 x 10 room all day he'd be content lying down and sleeping at my feet!!
When he's home alone a bigger house is far more of a risk than anything else. Harder to section off or keep him away from places he shouldn't be. Crating him in this case would mean zero break in deterent and also negate the "benefits" of a big house.
The only thing I wouldn't like about dog + apartment is all the noises he'd find unfamiliar. Wouldn't want to have more than one dog in an apartment though.
