Our group uses several different things. Something that is easy to obtain is hair. We save our own or family members hair and share with others from the group. I also ask freinds and family to save their hair in a baggie after haircuts, making sure noone else's gets mixed in.
This is going to sound really gross, but you can also ask female friends to save pads and tampons for your dogs to search for.
We are lucky in that one of our memebers is the head ER nurse at the local hospital and she is able to get us bone samples. Another lady is also a nurse and she saves bloody gauz for us to practise with.

Hey L, you're right I am surprised! I certainly underestimated the power of a good dog's nose!!!
I guess the old saying is true, "you learn something new everyday!!"

J, don't sweat it. I'm far from a rocket surgeon myself (or is that a brain scientist?).

If you are a K9 Handler for a PD or FD, you should contact any college in your area that has a med school. They will be able to give you cadaver parts once you fill out the proper paperwork (request must be on dept. letterhead, including your protocals for handling and storing the material, etc...). If you are a private person in a SAR group, this may not be possible.

You can always try the medical examiner's office. One of the guys in our club is a k9 handler and that's where they get their scent supplies.

Any other ideas? A friend of mine is in SAR and has tried a few avenues with no success. I have tried family members in the medical field as well. Another question would be I guess cars towed away from fatal car crashes - I have heard that after investigations are complete portions of the seats might be removed for this use?

Let me start off by saying I know cadaver work is important, but this is a working dog website where people want to get good information about working dog related WORK. So, you folks that have sources POST THEM! I could care less if it is fat from a plasic hack outfit. If it gets the job done?
Lets not get too touchy feely and all PC about serious subjects. I doubt any of us are going to get their feelings hurt and you just might give somebody that isn't a member a good list of ideas. . .SWANSTON! lol
(Above statments are just my opinions, as usual.)
I have been able to get materials from OHSU (Oregon Health Sciences University) before and I'm a civilain. If you present it to the institution you have very good chances of getting material. People who donate their bodies to science don't often designate a specific use so the institutions always have the option to donate.

Here's an average person's perspective.
I would have GLADLY donated my wisdom teeth when they were removed a few years ago had I known that there was a need. Have you considered asking an oral surgeon if you could create a small brochure or sign suggesting donating teeth to help train search dogs (I wouldn't call them cadaver dogs )? A lot of boys around that age would probably think the idea was cool. If you get too many teeth you can always let other groups use them.
I'd ask in person and bring a sample very tasteful brochure with me. Maybe one with a picture of a dog in a vest on the front, and a SAR emblem somewhere.
Just an idea. I really think that if the public knew about this they would be very open to the idea.

This is also a forum that is open to the general public, and I do not joke about cadaver training when the general public is present. That's just MY opinion.
However, since you insist, good sources of blood, hair, and teeth have already been posted in this thread. Used tampons, extracted teeth, placenta, hair, can all be obtained from friends or family members. If you know a dentist, doctor, or nurse, you may be able to get bloody gauze or other biohazard material that would otherwise be thrown away. The great thing about these sources is that you don't have to fill out any paperwork.

i have heard from a couple of people that you can use pork skin. get that from a butcher.
i haven't had a chance to see if it really works myself, but the sources i got the info from are SAR trainers.
