She's gone from living life in a kennel to the comforts of living within a house with humans and everything else that goes with it. You have an exceptional adventure ahead of you to experience by teaching and showing her how to love, be loved, and to trust you. My first GSD spent the first three years of her life living on a chain to a dog house until she came to live with me. She had no clue as to play toys, paced like a lion, and shyed away from affection until she learned to trust me. It took her six months to feel comfortable within the confines of the house and stop pacing. Time is on your side..don't rush her. I have a GSD male just turning 3 I got him at 15 months he was abused and shy of everything in the world. I took 3 months of long walks on a trail in the country letting him drag a long line and recalling him and alot of praise then we did obsticals tunnels, steps, cat walks etc, then we did the town exposure,then the big city all with light obedience nothing real hard the basics. getting him use to alot of sounds and people with alot of calm praise. I did this for a year always exposing him to new things. and now riley is doing excellent tracking and bite work with a full grip the people are real suprised at the club he loves doing things with the kids in school. along story short. give the dog time and build that bond that will give you an open door once that is established. I know it depends on the dog, but what would be the signs that the dog is ready? I myself adopted one yesterday, and since he already has some training, I didn't want to stop so we keep up the practice. But he needs OT big time, and the sooner he gets it the better. thanks

I could understand it if the pups had been mistreated but that is not the case.. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

The genes didn't all line up in the way we would have liked for them to. The majority of people with dogs "that were abused" by former owners were just the puppy you described. No one wants to blame the dog for being crappy so they will claim abuse. Pups like this can go on to be decent pets if handled and socialized properly, but the type of home that would do that type of work with a dog generally isn't looking for that type of project to work on.
