As Bob Scott says, kind of turning reactivity around: The obedience work (with markers) is done using the dog reactivity as nothing more than the ultimate distraction. Which it is!
So the other dogs are introduced exactly the way any high-level distraction is proofed for: slowly, outside the reactive zone to start, controlled and planned. And the dog is focused on the absorbing ob work and the wonderful rewards I have!
Other dogs, if this is done carefully and thoughtfully, slowly become background noise.
I start with NO distractions, though, to perfect our command of, say, "look at me."
Thanks again folks. Feels like I am going down the right path and your responses have reaffirmed that.
Improving my handling/trainer skills while helping my dog is so extrememly gratifying.
John for the compulsion part of training a DA dog, do you prefer a prong collar or a dominant dog collar as your primary collar? Or does it depend on the dog?
