Read the whole thread. It's a good one. Sounds like your dog already has the drive to do it, though. Just needs a little clarification on what to do AFTER you throw the ball.

hi i would like to teach my gsd to bring back a ball to me instead when i throw it he runs away with it than drops it. any suggestions? thanks angelo.
Angelo, the critical thing for me is to teach the dog what to do when he has the ball ---- before I throw it! That is, the dog learns to give it back before I toss it outdoors.
Are you familiar with back-chaining command links?

Back-chaining is training the last behavior in a command chain first, then the next-to-last behavior, etc.
The web-link that Michael gave you to click on, all about teaching the dog to retrieve, includes in the second or third post this phrase:
"I started with the back-chaining method, indoors, of marker-training the command to give me the toy (into my hand, but it could be dropped at your feet or whatever). "
