My situation is a little odd as I have two dogs that live with me permanently (a 1 year old GSD and a 14 year old Cairn Terrier). I also have two GSDs that live primarily with my parents, but are at my house several days a week.
All four of them can chill out together in the house or be out in the yard together.
A few things make it happen:
My dogs get plenty of exercise and don't have a lot of excess energy.
My dogs participate in training sessions together (except the old lady). This helps immensely...they learn that stay means stay and all that even if they are in a group.
My dogs all have great house manners.
My dogs all know what is expected of them.
I am sure there is more, but in all honesty, I just don't take any crap and they know it
Great post Melissa and I think you hit the nail on the head here:

An absolute must. Regardless of what’s going on around here, very little takes priority over the dogs getting their exercise. Age and energy level appropriate, draining exercise, every day.
Exercising the dogs is what kept me from responding until now...LOL. That is pretty much my whole evening every evening.
Like I said, I haven't exposed them to each other very much yet, so there is no puppy pestering or older dog bullying going on. They only see eachother in passing and have not been in the house together except with the pup in the crate. They have been walked together and got to sniff around on eachother with the pup tethered to me. I've probably got a lot of work to do before I can confidently let them interact like what you all are describing. But it gives me a goal!
One other thing I wanted to add is about the energy levels of my dogs...this is one thing I buy into about Cesar Millan when he says to get dogs who's energy compliments one another.
Of course, this is very hard when a dog is a puppy and this is why my youngsters have always spent a lot of time away from the older dogs. They are together in controlled instances only, like how you use a tether.
My dogs all have a very similar energy...well, except for my Kira who is crazy, but she also has great pack drive and loves to be with her "buddies".
