Wow, this thread is an oldie! Thanks for the response, Ian. My Lab was retired six months ago due to inoperable elbow dysplasia. We've done a few trails just for fun since, which he practically ripped my arms off to get to the end of....it's a shame, because now in hindsight I can see where I was messing up (not trusting my dog, second guessing myself), and I think I could have gone very far with him had I figured this out before. Oh well, you know what they say about hindsight. He has the drive and the ability to be a great groundscent dog, but sadly isn't structurally sound enough for serious work. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" /> Right now, training my airscent dog is my top priority, so he has to take a back seat, but lucky for him I miss working with him enough that we'll be doing the occasional trail just for fun and for me to keep learning. He will never be an operational SAR dog, though.
