Someone on Backyard Chickens posted a "chicken air conditioner" they made for theirs. Just took an old plastic trash can laying on it's side and put several frozen gallon milk jugs in it. Her chooks were clustered in/on it, so it was obviously helping!
Nice pictures Becky! I do the frozen bottles for the chickens and the rabbits, 2 liter bottles for the rabbits.
Dennis- your town doesn't allow for any chickens? Many areas that are zoned residential now allow for hens, 3-5, or you need at least 40,000 sf lot, 100 feet away from any houses.
I'm really considering chickens but I'm zoned residental, I'd have to give all my nieghbors free eggs to keep them from calling the county
Check your regs, many, many places are now allowing hens (no roos). If you do get some, I highly recommend Buff Orpingtons. They are really laid back personality-wise and lay nice XXlarge brown shelled eggs very reliably.
And now for a shocker!@!@! I saw these pics yesterday and couldn't believe my eyes!
These are young Buffs who have obviously found the BEST way to keep cool!
LOL!!! I'm not sure I'd want chickens in MY pool (wish I had one...) however, I gotta admit, with the heat index of 116 we had today, I'd probably break down and let the ol' gals have at it!!! GREAT pics Becky!! Too darn cute.
I didn't know chickens would sit in water like that! When I had mine they despised the rain and refused to step in the little puddles in their yard. Goofy hens never did lay a single egg, so I sold them. I was too attached to do anything else with them.
My dogs have been stealing my watermelons! Every time one is almost ripe, I find nare a seed and the fruit is gone. I need to get a fence around that garden.....
We just had too much to do to get around to putting in a real garden this year. We just stuck a few 'maters and peppers in pots and called it good. Largely because the spot we want for garden has huge pile of limbs and sticks on it right now. We've been under a burn ban almost all summer, but as soon as/if that ever gets lifted, we'll burn the pile and spread the ashes and till so it can sit the winter and be ready to add calf/chicken/goat poop, re-till and plant in spring.
