Thanks everyone. I'm going back and forth between bawling and feeling at peace with everything. One of my "little" brothers came over tonight and buried Miss in my mom's garden right outside the back door.
He came in to give me a hug afterwards and was crying too. Twently five with a famliy of his own now, but he loved her too - even though she almost always barked at him when he walked through the door. He asked me if I would like a dogwood tree as a marker for her grave.
Missy was my dog, but also the family dog. She really was part of the family and made her way into two professional family portraits and traveled along to two family weddings. Nobody realy batted an eye at the idea - she was part of the family.
These inspiring threads about how we say goodbye to our dearest friends and how we honor the blessing that they are .... these threads help hundreds and hundreds of people facing this goodbye.
You are an inspiration; you honored your beloved friend in the kindest way possible.
So perfectly said Connie.
Mara, my heart sank when I came home to read this very sad news.
I am so very sorry for your loss. It is through blurry eyes that I write you this now.
I have been so inspired by your recent posts since learning of Missy's illness. You made me think differently about the time you were spending with Missy, and just enjoying the simple, daily tasks you both enjoyed together.
I just want to thank you for sharing your thoughts and insights, even during something so hard and painful as her last days.
You gave Missy the best life a dog could hope for, and in turn she gave you the perfect companionship, the best a handler/owner could ask for.
Mara, how very sad I am on one hand, but so very much at peace I am on the other... Missy lived her life as a good working dog should be so fortunate to live, and then crossed over in a way we should all be so fortunate to experience.
You did so good... And thank you for letting us get to know your dear frosty muzzle throughout this experience.
How will you go on from here? By putting one foot in front of the other every morning. It will get easier.
So sorry Mara... You know that you gave Missy the best she could have hoped for, and that was more then she needed. She knew you loved her. I'm glad it was peaceful.
It sounds to me like you timed that perfectly, managed her end weeks and final
sleep as well as it can be done.
Looking back, how fast the time goes by.
Feel proud of what a good owner you were to that dog.
