My girl just passed this spring and went to Sch training 2 days before. I knew our time was nearing the end and initially I tried to keep her cuddling with me to no avail, she was miserable. So we went, her eyes lit up and we had a blast. The trainer/decoy were wonderful enough to scale things down so she could participate successfully. When she did pass, it was with a tug in her mouth. It wasn't at all what I wanted to do, I wanted to be miserable but did it for her.
I realize that my situation isn't nearly what you are asking, just trying to share that their enjoyment, whatever it is, never stops and if you have the ability to let them participate within their physical limitiations/injury prevention then by all means do so.
OK, I feel better. I was just hoping it was the right thing to do, but he enjoys so very much.
I also feel a little guilty that the decoy and other members are so sweet and helpful even though I just showed up out of the blue and started stalking them, so to speak. They have been so helpful and patient and kind.
I have noticed that Coulter has been acting up a bit. I was told it's because we're building his drive (like he needed that!). He now gets to stay in his crate when I'm at work and well, I didn't like that carpet in the bedroom anyway......lol I guess when he heard them tell me to practice tugging at home, he decided do a little extra credit work. Such a good boy.
I'm still grinning over an experience from last week. I was allowed to wear the sleeve and let a HUGE (to me, Coult's only 47 pounds) GSD take a bite. I got to stand in the blind and everything - it was incredible! I loved it! And what a neat dog he is!
Great to hear you're having fun Lisa!!! Toni will be 7 in September, and we just started learning flyball. She also does agility and bitework for fun. I have her on SynFlex for her joints and she seems to be fine. It's harder for ME to keep up to HER!!
Working dogs need to work. It's what they live for. I like to mix it up for my dogs, so we learn all kinds of different sports. The dogs love it, and when we are done with training, they actually SLEEP!!!
I'd love to see some pics.. of Coulter working, and of you in the sleeve taking a bite (you're gonna be a decoy someday, I just know it!!)
Oh, I guess I'm not training enough - he still barely sleeps. Although, today after training, he did jump into his crate and lie down for a bit. Usually, he spins.
I just found out that Coulter is in a youtube video, I haven't been able to access it yet (can't do that at work *pout*) and if I can figure out how to get the pictures off my phone and online, you all can have a great laugh at me in the blind.
I like the idea of decoy work, but I'm all of 125 pounds - some of those dogs would have me for lunch.
