first thing I did was get control of the kids. They did the screaming and running thing which only cranked up the puppy so I showed them how to redirect the puppy onto a toy. My kids have been helping me for awhile now, so they know when "Drago" starts his biting or into something he shouldn't be he is redirected to a toy and or food. I would stop the physcal correction at this point, it only tells the pup that hands hurt. How old are the kids and puppy?
Ok..so that's the 4th person that has told you to REDIRECT the pup to something appropriate for him to bite. Control the kids & the dog, & do not correct the puppy.
Also, is it possible to train a dog to provide personal protection but also be a family dog?
Almost never - especially with children in the house.
respectfully disagree, while your pupper is geared for suppressing riots and small revolutions which requires a special dog, mine has done her job when needed and I have no problem with her and kids seven and up. Drago looks like he is going to be the same way.
I must qualify my response, Will R has been in military/security/ defense and was a office holder and I think he's titled a few dogs. I've never gone past club level work with mine and only one "For real" bite.

I have a 6 month old male German Shepherd who loves to "wrestle" with my children and myself. He loves to chase them around the house and yard and though they enjoy it his teeth are sharp and it often hurts.
This would never in a million years be something I would allow with little kids and
a pup.
@Dennis - Thank you. That example you gave is just what I needed.
@Anne - You really should learn to stop shouting. I might suggest taking a deep breath.
@D M
If you haven't seen it already with Sch trainers you will. many of the best trainers have HIDEOUS people skills (not you Anne, really, your a nice person, pls don't hit me again...)
When I started with Erika, if I couldn't watch her, in the kennel/crate she went. I didn't allow alot of free play with kids until she was much older and what I considered "finished" and then I am still careful of what kids she can play with. For example, you have a bratty kid over that with pull on ears,tails and run at the dog trying to chase her with a stick, it's going to end very badly. While the average Lab or Beagle will just howl and try to get away PPD/Sch line dogs are going to bite and it won't be a nip.
