She is keeping a female for herself, and said that all the other dogs will be placed based on temperament. And the reason that I want puppy #1 is because of temperament! I feel that we are a good fit. This is the first that i'm hearing about showing, except that there is a show home in California that wants a male and they get first pick. I just feel that I'm being put in an unfair situation since she didn't mention any of this until yesterday. I thought that the breeder was going to be picking the best pup for us based on our lifestyle, which is what she TOLD US, and not on whether or not we would allow her to show and/or breed him.
The pup with the kinked tail is beautiful and sweet, but I feel that he may be a little too soft for us. I know it's hard to tell at this point but he seems like he may not have as much drive. If it comes down to it though, I will take him.

Niomi,
doesn't that third article say the opposite?
about the marking i mean?
This part: (I could just be reading it wrong..lol)
Effects of gonadectomy on behavior
Behaviors that are most likely to be affected by gonadectomy are those that are sexually dimorphic (seen primarily in one gender). Examples of sexually dimorphic behaviors include flagging in bitches, and mounting and urine marking in dogs.
(a Gonadectomy is the same as neuturing??)
I m just curious, not trying to start an argument!

Just be honest with the breeder and tell them you are not comfortable with showing and only want that pup. If you guys don't agree move one....

Based on what you are saying I would step away from this litter as it sounds like you and this breeder are not meshing. Simply put, the breeder has final say who goes where and if you do not like how she is handling the situation you need to look elsewhere for a puppy.

I really don't think it's to the point where I would look for another breeder. I was more or less wondering what everyones thoughts are on the situation given what she told me in the beginning, and whether me being frustrated with it is valid. I guess it's her call and I'll just have to be honest with her about my expectations if she wants to show my dog (which are - after he gets his championship then it's over and I don't want her to co-own or breed him).If she just comes to pick him up once in a while for a weekend, that's fine. The shows that she will be taking him to are in my city, so it's not like she'll be taking him across the country. And I know that he'll be in good hands. I just don't understand why she couldn't have been more honest about this in the beginning. All she would have had to say is "if there is a male puppy that I feel is show quality, I will try to place him in a show home"

So I asked the breeder if she would have any intentions of breeding him if she was to show him to championship and she said that she often shows progeny of dogs that she breeds because it gets the results of her breeding program out to the public. So people can see the stock that goes to pet homes is also high quality (and not just the ones that she keeps). She says that she's just proud of the beagles that she produces and likes to show them off, and promises to not have any hidden agenda. So ya sounds like that really wasn't an issue.
Back to my main concern which was the neutering - Thanks for the great sources Niomi. I've been doing so much research lately I'm surprised I haven't heard about these concerns. And Ed even suggests neutering at 6 months for pets. I guess there isn't really much to lose, and maybe a bit to gain, by letting him keep his jewels for a bit longer. Haha.

I meant marking in the house - but marking in general can also be controlled.
I have a male who was neutered at 6 months to the day. He marks outside, but never in the house.
Another friend has a male who is 19 months and was never neutered. He also marks outside, but never in the house.
I think they mean marking in general and the O.P. was concerned about marking in the house, which IMO is a training issue.
In our classes I have noticed that the neutered males are less likely to mark in general, if it was done at a young age, but even the neutered ones can mark. I just want to make sure she knows that in house marking is not a neutered vs. intact thing.
Hopefully I answered your question...LOL

Yup - I think you really need to call her. Right now you're just imaging scenarios. Maybe they're true, maybe not. But if you like everything else about the situation, you really need to sit down and talk it out with her.

One thing that hasn't been addressed is this: Amanda, you are planning to do obedience training with your puppy, right? I would suggest you find out if this breeder is okay with you doing obedience work with this dog while she is showing him in conformation. It's been my experience that many (though certainly not all) conformation handlers do not want the owners doing any obedience training with a dog while it is being shown in conformation.
