Jackpot! Just what I was looking for. Now I have an abundance of information. I'm going to cut and paste it all tomorrow and save it all to a dog treat file. I knew all you dog experts would have an abundance of suggestions and boy do you ever I cant wait to try some of these and I'm sure my dogs will love them.
Not home made but kibble can work really well for treats, too! I usually use kibble around home because it's cost effective, not messy and doesn't spoil in treat pouches My dogs work for basic kibble at home and are quite excited about ones like EVO (nice tiny pieces!) or Orijen (super high quality). The price works nicely, too - around $20 for 4-5#.

When you want to make healthy and tasty dog treats, make liver treats for dogs. Liver treats make an excellent training treat that your dog is sure to go crazy over. These treats also make a tasty topping sprinkled over your dog's food. To use as a dog food topping it is best to cut, or break, the liver treats into small pieces.

My last set of treats I made with a pig liver. I cooked the liver in a cast iron frying pan with a lid over medium heat until it was cooked through.
This cooking technique leaves a lot of liver liquid in the pan. After I removed the liver, I tossed in a couple of handfuls of Arcana treats (we switched from Orijen, less loose stools) and allowed them to soak up the juices). These treats go in a container in the fridge for special treats.
I took the liver and sliced it into strips and then bite sized cubes and put it in the oven in a glass cooking dish to dry. I had the temp at 300 and I overcooked them. Next time I will try 200. Even overcooked, these liver treats have been great and both dogs love them.
This has been a very inexpensive way to have three grades of treats: everyday (Arcana plain); extra motivator (Arcana soaked in liver juices - also softer for higher drive work); and jackpot (pure dried liver).
