Leashing the dog and taking her for just a short walk might help stimulate the urge to 'go'. My dogs, once they outgrew the puppy stage, have never liked going to the bathroom in 'our' yard. A walk, and the activity, and smells from other dogs might help her learn to pee outside. Perhaps that is why she is more prone to going to the bathroom outside of the office?
Just something to try. It's a bit more of a production every time she has to go out, but just a 5 minute walk would probably cut it for a small dog.
Well, I have been monitoring her like a hawk and pretty well giving her lots of opportunity to go outside, I have another rescue dog from the same place and he is really helping her AND ME - he seems to have come from a normal home, is housetrained and knows how to walk on a leash. I think she was a puppy mill breeding animal, never walked on a leash, never walked on pavement, never had her nails clipped.
If her schedule is altered though we have problems, I had to go get my knee X-Rayed one day and so we went to work later in the day and she wouldn't poop outside before we went in. She had no problems pooping inside though. So I guess you could say she is housetrained under ideal circumstances.
Thanks for the tips and thanks Cheri for letting me know some kind of time line for this.
When I take her out in the yard she is on a leash and we walk. She wouldn't walk on the pavement at all at first and only since having the other rescue dog will she do it now. So we have always had a leashed walk, my backyard is quite large so it takes about 10 minutes to walk around it. It's more about her not knowing what she is supposed to do I think. The first day I got the new dog he just went outside and immediately she went too. It's a system that seems to be working well except when my schedule gets changed up and then she won't go outside, she wait and go inside.
I suppose I could crate her to not give her the opportunity to go inside when these situations arise. She gets to go outside every 2 hours so it wouldn't be like she'd be crated all day or anything.
