In addition to Steve's excellent input, I would not rule out working hard on getting this dog some opportunities to burn off some serious energy. (fenced in tennis court and a chuckit to throw balls??). A high energy lab getting an hour walk on leash each day is not a dog getting a chance to really BURN off that energy. He could be showing his "frustration" the only way he knows how.
Kudos to you for rescuing him, and for admitting/realzing that what you were doing (kneeing/slappying) was only going to damage your relationship with this guy.

I don't know what the deal is. We just came back from the park where I had him on a 30' leash (instead of his normal 6'), and he got to run hard, swim, and play. We got back home, and I gave him a bath with shampoo, dried him off, praised, gave treats for a good boy. I tied him up (as I always do) and went for a shower myself. As soon as I unleashed him, he went nutso on me began jumping and clawing at me (I've got about a 3' scratch, WITH BLOOD RUNNING down my leg from his claws; I was in my boxers, of course ) Well, he didn't realize that the prong (and leash) was still on him, and he got a correction like he'd never experienced before.
He's leashed back up at the door now (we don't have a kennel).
What is going on here.

He jumped up on you?
I understand that when you have a 3" bloody scratch, it's hard to step back and see that what happened was, he jumped up on you. Was there more than jumping up on you? (You being in your boxers and his claws leaving scratches are not in the dog's ken.)
" .... jumping on me until I wrestle him down and get the collar back on" sounds a lot like a rowdy game to me. And jumping on you sounds maybe like "let's play that rowdy game again."
What basic ob does he have now? Does he have, say, a bulletproof "sit"? I'm asking what behavior you can command instead of the one you don't want.
I'm going back to what Steve said: "Its easy to fall into always trying to stop everything with a high energy dog and never really teach them what it is that you do want."

Connie, yes, he's jumping at me, but with aggression: He is NOT playing! When I unleashed him (he had two leashes on) he started growling and charging at me with the intention, in my opinion, of attacking me. Again, this is not a game he's playing.

Nothing I do calms him down. Yes, he has obedience training. He knows STOP, SIT, DOWN, LEFT SIDE, HEEL, TOUCH, BACK UP, MOVE, etc.
None of tese commands work when he decides he wants to attack me. It ALWAYS ends up in an Alpha Roll, which I know isn't effective on this dog, but it's a fight that I have to win in order to get him controlled. Maybe he's untrainable. Maybe I've damaged the relationship beyond repair, I don't know. I hate to take him t animal control cause I know they'll put him down. Nobody wants a black dog.

If you can't repair the relastionship, there are many other places besides AC that could take him. Please consider a rescue (and I have come across a few online esp. geared towards black dogs) Before leaving him somewhere like that. I think you can fix this though, if you have the "want to."
...Nobody wants a black dog.
Nobody except several forum members on here, many of my off-screen friends and several hundreds of other dog owners. Black dog hair goes better with my wardrobe I just adopted one crazy black dog 3 weeks ago

Amy, I so want to fix it. But tell me how? What do I do when he charges at me like this? YES, I can always control him while he has the prong collar and leash on him. Problem is, he doesn't act up when I have these on him. Now, I guess someone will say "leave them on him", to which I will reply, "for the rest of his life"?? I ned alternatives to a wrestling match with him. I alwayas win the match, but he keeps coming back for more.
I wish I had a way of capturing him on video, but I don't.

Sounds like this rough game is the only way he could get some exciting interaction out of you.
You could learn how to play tug with him and teach him the rules in play. Check out Power of playing tug DVD, it'll help a lot.
Of course, there is nothing better than working with a good professional dog trainer.
