Rain is letting up here (northern nj)... the town will probably flood, impacting major access roads. Our power is back on (after a 2 hour outage) and the dogs and cats are ok.
I hear my daughter's cellar is flooded (Hoboken). She doesn't even know how bad it is because she and gamily are in Maine; her neighbors told them about the cellars on their street.
At club today, one of members from the Pittsburgh area said he saw a steady stream of utility trucks and tree company trucks heading east on I-80. Power companies have mutual assistance pacts for these events. Jim said he even saw utility trucks with the Kansas City Power & Light logos heading east-bound.
I understand the big box stores have semis full of disaster supplies -- chainsaws, plywood etc. positioned and rolling in.
Perhaps we need to outsource FEMA to corporate America -- they seem to to know how to respond effectively and handle these things.
Fortunately, Irene seems to have not lived up to it's hype.

I live in the 'burbs" so a certain level of self sufficiency is required and essential but if you choose to live in the big cities even if wealthy you are very dependent on government services. Life style choice
Glad everyone is safe - we were wondering you yesterday.
I was reading about the people killed and it seems that everyone that wasn't killed by a falling tree, either inside or outside; wre people needing a Darwin Award nomination.
Wind-surfing in a hurricane? Okie Dokie.
Surfing in a hurricane? Alrighty.
People waving their arms at the storm saying, "Kill me Please". Irene was happy to oblidge.
couple of ppl in the City of Richmond killed in their homes when some trees came down, with all the amateur lumberjacks and electricians out now I think we may loose a couple more
Southern Maine here. Looks like we lucked out and only got a good stiff breeze, and a little bit of rain. Lights only flickerd for a few seconds. I had Cassy outside to play in the wind (wasn't raining at the time), she had fun and got to chase leaves around the yard while I watched. Wasn't really that bad at all.
