I agree with Connie. Dieks would have gotten a "knock it off" from me, which also backs up Haz. Neither would have gotten any more of a correction than that though. Human interference can cause more harm than good when it comes to pack structure and relationships. We don't read canine as well as the dogs do, and some give and take is normal. IE Dieks seeing what Haz would do, Haz telling him "back off buddy". Pretty minor overall, nobody fought or even growled, just a basic sorting out of things. By interfering Dieks now thinks he has your permission and "back up" if he wants to push Haz a little harder next time, and Haz isn't sure he's allowed to tell Dieks to back off.

Good point!
PS
That oh-so-casual "smelled Haz's opposite ear - over his neck" .... I kinda liken that to the 13-year-old boy in the movie theater doing the old yawn-and-stretch and then having his arm somehow land across the back of the girl's seat.
My response to the dog is pretty much "I saw that; quit it."
As I was reading the earlier posts, I was thinking what the last two said. Haz may now think that he isn't allowed to give the old "back-the-truck-up" when another dog postures. Diek's intent (or lack of) is in no way a factor or a consolation for Haz.
