Buck is on leash when he is out of the crate. We have two cats and he thinks it would be great fun to chase them. He would be tethered regardless of the cats. I can definitely tell you that he is probably under exercised. You're right, I think he just doesn't like the crate. I am SAHM so I'm here all the time. I also found out that he is a Mal-mix, but I figure that doesn't matter much. It's his drive and temperament that I need to focus on, not his breeding or lack there of.
Thanks for all of the feedback. I just figured that I had asked a stupid question and that's why I didn't get any responses. I'm still figuring out how to work this board so I sincerely apologize for not having seen this earlier. Leerburg rocks!
Wow! Yep, I don't think Buck has SA. I think he just doesn't like the crate. When he is with my DH, he is fine though very watchful for my return. He doesn't try to get out or destroy it, he just doesn't want to be in it. I need to get a better program going for this dog, he could be so much and I am wasting his potential. I also feel as if I am begrudging him any structured happiness with his family. I have no problem tethering him except for the cats. What I started doing a few days ago is putting his e-collar on him while tethering and nicking him when he even looks at them. So far this is s-l-o-w-l-y starting to work. I just want him to be healthy and happy, and for us to be able to live with him.
Hahaha, Koenig does the same thing when I leave him out with my other half. He'll lay down, in a perfect sphinx down, and stare at the door for HOURS..... as in 6 hours! He's nuts.... Damn dog. lol.
Cats can be tricky- I've given up on 'fixing' Koenig with cats. Luckily, I live with a 'dog proof' cat, and she does not run from him. So long as she won't run, he can't chase. The old kitty cat at my parents stays far away, and well hidden when my brindle beast is around, so he's out of luck there in cat chasing as well.

Lol! Exactly this at my house. My female cat hates the slavering beast with a sincere and unholy passion. She would rather stay away from him at all costs, but my male cat is such a lover that it has impaired any common sense that he EVER had! He doesn't run, he'll saunter by and rub up against the crate. I have to scold him away and cover the crate with something so Buck can't see him sometimes.
