Could always go with the tried and true Golden retriever. Just don't watch "Marley & me". =)
In all seriousness though, if I was looking for another family pet, I'd get a rescue. My next non-working dog is going to be a pure bred mutt, Heinz 57 variety. They just seem to have this thankfulness that never goes away, and you would be saving a perfectly good family companion. You should seriously consider it.

what ever you get, get a female. from my experience and ancedotal accounts, you don't get ranking issues. I was surprised when my two UberBitches deferred to "Drago" now a young male.

agreed! (I think Marley was a lab and from some of Zuki's behavior I would say she has some of the same DNA... I don't recommend anything close to Marley ....Zuki is most likely the only dog I will own having lab or retriever in the blood)

A Chesapeake Bay Retriever might make a good choice. You could also visit the shelters.

What about a Boxer? The ones I've met are playful without being hyper and good with kids/other animals.

A breed that is good with kids and other dogs (no Chow, Akita, Pits, etc)
While I agree that Akitas are wonderful animals I don’t believe that, as puppies, they’re a good choice for homes with children.
Our women these days are different, much like the Akita lines of ancient Japan. A strong woman that runs a household - works in rice fields all day and returns home to tend to her children was/is living a very different life than we are used to in North America. I believe those pack dynamics would have a much defined place for their noble protector and I don’t think additional household dogs would be part of that equation.
JMHO but raising an Akita properly has very much to do with ensuring their needs (structure, exercise, discipline) are addressed in a timely manner with respect. Having young children around can tend to cloud those waters for young pups, especially when their inclusive role hasn’t been clearly defined.
As well as Chows, which I am a big fan of, I think your assessment of ruling out these two breeds, for your family situation, is a good one.
If you know your way around dogs though, and it sounds like you do, I also agree that the bully breeds can’t be beat for a family with children.
As for which dog, I would have to go with Kelly and few others. You can get low and higher energy dogs in most every breed. With a specification of a lower energy dog, what better than an assessment from a Rescue, of proven past performance from a dog in their care.
I wish you luck in your search. The right pup is out there waiting and I'm sure you'll know him/her when you meet them.

Dennis, did you mean to say I should get a male? It's been a long time, but I thought 2 females was more likely to cause problems.
I plan to get another female. I don't want to deal with a male dog. I think Starbuck is old enough and dominant enough that the new puppy will fall in line.
We have considered a shelter dog, but I really want a young puppy. There don't appear to be many that meet our requirements in the imeddiate area. It has been a month or two since I searched online.

Despite what people seem to think Labradors are actually very high energy dogs in general and are one of the most common dogs in shelters because people can't 'handle' them and their exercise requirements. So many are obese because people get them with the mentality that they make 'the perfect family dog', over feed, under exercise, and then dump them when they start tearing up the house.
I so totally agree!!! My two Lab mixes were gotten as shelter dogs for that reason only they weren't overfed and obese. Our purebred lab from field lines came from a breeder who screened his clients to make sure we could handle her insane energy level. That being said, they don't really settle until 2-3yrs old and love having a job. However our 6yro lab mix still acts like he did when he was 2, and don't even think about skipping walks or vigorous physical & mental activity because you will be sorry!

Keith, have you read up on pack leadership on this site? You really don't want your older dog to be dominant with your new puppy. You are the leader, not her. As far as male dogs go, I found mine to be much nicer to work with than my female. I would seriously consider it. If you are looking into rescue, search online every day because chances are, the really nice puppies you may be interested in are getting snached up quickly. Leave an application at a few rescues that tell what you are looking for and then they can call you if anything comes in. My breed of choice for a family dog would have to be an Austrailian Shepherd. Energy to burn, but the ability to turn it off when it's time to relax. Great with kids IMHO.
