I don't know if this is really an answer to your questions but I occassionally give my dog one of the Nature's Variety lamb bones (http://www.naturesvariety.com/products/treats/NV/bones). They're about 8" long and come frozen, but I thaw them before I give them to him. Dante's a 70lb labmix and for him the lamb leg bone is somewhere in between a recreational bone and a rmb. IOW, he eats them, but it takes him a while to do it.
Haha- was that link the one word you could say to get people riled up? Nylabones are known to cause some pretty serious problems when a chuck breaks off and gets impacted in the intestines..... Not generally recommended.
John, as the consensus was above- it's a very individual thing, specific to your dog about breaking teeth. Koenig chews VERY hard, and I can't give him antlers or rec bones anymore, for fear of him breaking teeth. He gets Kongs, and Orbee's. My other dog is perfectly happy to easily gnaw on a rec bone or an antler, and she does so safely, so I don't worry about the risk of broken teeth.
I LOVED the Bravo Bully sticks...but our local store stopped carrying them and replaced them with these super thin and horribly stinky ones that last all of 2 minutes. They're to expensive to buy online with shipping unless I can get them in bulk...which I can't seem to find....
Ryuk can finally have kongs now, but I still don't 100% trust him not to dismantle them if left alone, the tug-a-jug is to loud and kills the floors, he just unscrews the twist-n-treat with his paws and cleans it out. He's not interested in antlers, has learned to extract the treat from the fireplug and everlasting treat ball,
I refuse to use nylabone products with the exception of a single bone I use to work on retrieves (he doesn't get to chew it). He also doesn't get traditional rawhide bones or chips and isn't allowed greenies....
I was hoping to move to raw bones to solve this issue since with the hardwood floors its not like I'm scrubbing blood off the carpets anymore....
I'm wondering if I buy turkey necks, chicken or beef parts, thaw them, stuff them into a round mold or something harder for him to grip, then freeze them...wonder if that would be enough of a challenge (....can't wait until a guest looks in our freezer though...)
