Move it further to your right a little at a time. Each day move it over further, until it is behind your back. Switch ball to your left had behind your back at the last second to reward by throwing it out to the left or on the left to your back.
If you reward from your right hand or out to the front or to the right you will be encouraging him to come across the front of you body at the heel..reaching for the ball.
I also do alot of stepping back & slight left turns to keep him on my left & in the correct position & not trying to move forward & across the front of me looking for the ball. I just use an Ah-AH if he trys to move ahead of me & look toward the ball. I want him looking up at me. I also will use a watch me command if I see he is not paying attention to me.
mark and reward when he sits quiet and in correct possition.
so that means taking him all the way back to the basics in the heel possition and only moving foward when he is containing his drive?
i'll also take video of him with the ball and treats...just ran out of the dried liver so have to wait to see if that works after our trip to petco.
i think we've hit the point of no more puppy..he's starting to mark, guard his back yard, and pushing limits like a 18 year old boy i'd like to stay on the mark and reward program vs correct and force. is their a mixture that should be used? he knows the correct possition for fuss...he knows sit, down and all that..so i guess i am just wondering if he is to the point where there are corrections for incorrect possition/behavior..and rewards for correct possition. or are corrections not neccisary at this point. obviously i've corrected him before..but i've tried to stay away from physical corrections when in bite work or OB. verbal "no"s are starting to lose their "edge". also the more in drive he gets...the more cuts, nicks, bruises and scratches my fingers, hands, and sides get. he lets go when he realizes it's my flesh and not the ball...puppy teeth i can deal with..adult teeth and force...not my cup of tea
He's barking for his toy, my dog does the same thing, very annoying, it's gets worse if you let it go. Correct him for it, when he stops give him the toy. He may start spinning if the barking stops, lol
And remember some dogs are just more verbal then others.
Both of mine are...my male VERY much so. Getting him to be quieter at the heel has been difficult. But he is finally as quiet as he will ever be. Not perfect..but I know how really hard it is for him to do it...so I'll take it.
ETA..With my male physical corrections are not going to work for this & not necessary. He is a very handler sensitive dog. They will just make him hectic, more frustrated & noisier. I would rather save any physical corrections for someplace that a verbal correction doesn't help & a real infraction.
Don't know whether Al meant a physical or verbal correction, as I know KC is a somewhat handler sensitive dog, also.
No ace isn't handler sensitive, unfortunately. But as long as I know he won't be docked points for his barking I'm totally fine with it. I'll just go baby steps at a time and only reward when not barking. I think he's starting to get it. This time he only barked when we moved. And then kept calm and quiet so we'll literally take baby steps till he can keep calm enough through that.
Oh and I tried the verbal comand nope and he just repositioned. So I used "wait" and he started to think through it. I use wait when I go through gates and doors to make him let me go first. So it caught him off guard a bit.
You all have been so helpful yet again! Ace has made huge strides, I have learned a lot of what NOT to do, and a lot of what to do's. Now that I have a great group to work with and a wonderful forum, I bet height just survive being owned by a newbee like me.. And visa versa
so today we were just playing fetch with his ball and i asked him to fuss while he held the ball in his mouth. Just to see if he would do it. and OH MY GOSH!! it was the best fuss of all time..like ready for his BH kinda amazing! didn't forge ahead, turnd right on a dime, re adjusted all by himself for a perfect finish...AND even backed up with me in a perfect fuss! slow fast or supper slow he was in perfect alignment.
so what the heck do i do with that? he obviously didn't care if there was a reward or not..just wanted to please me..well he already had his reward in his mouth lol..oh and obviously no barking.
