We have a whole house vac for the hard surfaces, which I love, but not so much for the carpets... Bissell for pets does an amazing job on the rugs - love it! No bags and not expensive.
When I buy a vacuum, I have an expectation that it will last a long time. My Dyson Animal slowly fell apart at around 2 years of use. For what I paid, I expected more. I didn't like the plastic feel of it, and it was always quite loud. I know a lot of people love the bagless feature, but I had to empty the canister constantly and it made a mess when I dumped it. It finally died last year when the motor blew up.
After researching different brands, I decided on a Miele. Love it. It works great and has a nice, durable feel to it. I don't mind the bags - they completely seal when you remove them, and it seems to take forever for the bag to fill up.
If you have mostly hardwood and tile, a canister vacuum is recommended by Miele. I have an upright.
My girl friend has a robot roomba and they love it I'm amazed how well it works for a little guy.
It's not taking place of there upright but it does help out.
I was really set on the robotic vacuum, then found out from more than one dog friend that they are constantly having to replace them when they burn up from getting dog hair in them. They advertise they will replace them, but only one per year, and what a pain even if they would. SO sadly, I let that idea go. But I would really love it!
My girl friend is happy with it and luckily no problems yet, they have 2 dogs and 3 cats.
They do clean it on a regular basis but I understand the roomba stops when it's full so they clean it then send it off to work.
I'm sure if they didn't also use there upright and the roomba was the sole vacuum then I could see it burning up it doesn't have large capacity.
I recommend the Carpet Pro CPU 2T Commercial Vacuum - Cheaper than a dyson ($220), built to last with metal parts, surprisingly quiet, and picks up my GSD's hair great! I bought mine on amazon and selected it because of the great reviews and price.
Good luck with whatever vacuum you choose!
I have a Kirby. Works great, hard to kill. Even has carpet shampooing attachments I tend to be allergic, so I vacuum a lot and want to get it all. LOVE it for dog hair.
Our cheapo $50 dirt devil from Target worked wonders (it was taken by my previous housemate but I'm told it's still working great!). It's going on 3 years old now...It was marketed as a "dorm room" model. It was bagless one, I like that it could hold a LOT of stuff in there and still have sucking power. The vacuum before it was a cheapo (but more expensive than $50) pet hair model from dyson, it died at a year old, it was a lousy vacuum anyway...
We tried a robo vacuum especially designed for pet hair. Admittedly we got it used at a yard sale but it was in great condition. It was a Roomba....it was only okay at getting the hair up, our cat loved to ride on it, Ryuk kept picking it up and sticking it in boxes....overall I'd say skip the Roombas....not worth it.
