Thanks for the tips everyone!
Amy - he doesn't mind going in there at all, and when things get too crazy in the house he will go in all on his own (we leave the door open until bed time). He just doesn't play with any of his toys when in there. He is alowed to be out of his crate and stay in the living room with us until bed time. I don't feed him in the crate - didn't want to get started and have to stop in a couple of months when he fills the whole thing!
The problem really starts when he knows we are close (night time) or can see us (pen in the shop) and the door is closed. I am sticking with the positive training, so he doesn't get reprimanded, and I have stopped giving the "Quiet" command or acknowledging him in any way when he making a fuss.
