I haven't read the whole thread so sorry if I'm redundant.
The period after a seizure is called the postictal stage. Every living thing that has a seizure has a postictal stage. I've seen seriously human aggressive dogs be complete marshmallows after seizures, and I've seen nice dogs be aggressive. Every animal has a different postictal experience. Koda gets aggressive. It's not a bad thing, as he will always get out of it. But keep in mind that after every seizure he will likely be aggressive. The postictal stage is the brain getting its equilibrium back. Remember, it's just been very electrically overstimulated. Strange behaviors are not uncommon at all and should be expected.
Phenobarbital is an excellent anticonvulsant that works very well in dogs. It's also very cheap. After one seizure, they'll likely treat for a while and wean off if the dog is seizure free for some time.
I have seen dogs continue to have seizure activity even on phenobarbital or potassium bromide. Having epilepsy myself, I always found it interesting that newer, extended release medications that are more seizure type oriented than broad spectrum are not available. Unfortunately veterinary medicine is fairly far behind that of human medicine and the better anticonvulsant are a lot more expensive.
No I appreciate all the info I can get. It makes me feel better his aggression after the seizure is normal and he won't suddenly become aggressive forever more after it would have killed me since he is a teddy bear, that is also what prevented me from taking him off of it since we were living with my mom but now that we have a new place and that fact that it will destroy his liver plus the encouragement from the vet since he has not had a seizure since I am now weaning him off of it. I also believe that potassium bromide is the one she recommended if he continues to have problems.
unfortunately Today koda had another seizure so I am making an appointment with the vet to see what we can do to get him on another medication other than phenobarb I am heartbroken that this happened again
I made a quick video of the aftermath to show the vet how he acts
He actually had 2 seizures today ,the second one right after I posted
The first one lasted 3 to 4 minutes than he started acting like in the video for about 15 to 20 min then he had the second seizure which lasted about 2 to 4 min then the aftermath was about 45 min then he came out of it and became very needy he cried and whined if I went some where he could not come with me. Right now he is acting his normal self.
the previous seizure he had was similar in time to todays.
If you live anywhere near a vet school you might consider giving them a call. Some places have elaborate seizure protocols and study groups plus access to CT , and there might even be funding.
