You know, sometimes with pups you just have to wait them out at night.....
Do you think somewhere you may of reinforced the "If I sound pathetic, I'll get out and play" by mistake?
Not sure if this was for me or the OP, and I don't want to hijack the thread, but I will give a quick answer.
For us, the answer is Yes & No -
When he was little he would bark every 2 hrs, and I would get up and take him out to potty. Then it went to about every 4 hrs, then 6. The problem is that at 6 hrs it is still 3 AM for us. Changing his feeding schedule (last feeding @ 6:30PM) has helped.
The No half of the answer is that I think he gets Separation Anxiety (even though he is otherwise very confident). I work from home, so he is around people constantly, except when we crate him at night or when we go somewhere we can't take him. He will lay in the crate chewing on a rubber toy stuffed with cream cheese (if the door is open or closed) and not make a peep if we are in the room. As soon as you close the door and leave he starts barking non-stop for up to an hour and continues to bark off and on until you let him out. He isn't really much of a barker when he is out. If he thinks you left and let him out (even after only a few minutes) he is all wound up like you were gone for a week.
