Well, the advice I'm getting locally is to shoot it. There is a pest control service that does trapping, but I'm not so sure about that...pretty pricy. Brian, you're right. DOW wont do it. Apparently, hunting them is legal here.
There's a beagle down the road, (was kept as a yard pet ), that was tore up a few weeks ago. They thought it was a coyote. He was really old and overweight.
I guess I'm going to have to do something. I can't take a chance with my dogs getting hurt. Jamie, what you said above is kind of what I always thought, but I'm hearing from LOTS of people that they have been known to be aggressive.

Wild animals don't play by "rules". THE rule is to survive.
They don't respect. They do what works.

I recently watched a program on National Geographic regarding the
death of a young woman killed by three coyotes. According to them
their is the typical small normal looking coyote and a wolf-coyote
hybred, much bigger, bolder. This woman was killed by the wolf-coyote hybred (tracked, killed by park services). This was the first known death of a human by a coyote.

I've always found that my kids' pellet/paint guns usually scare them off if I can hit them. Have shot a couple with it and they haven't returned. We have them all over near the small farm and have never had any problems with them killing any stock (or even chickens) Funny, I can hunt just about anything except coyotes and fox. I guess they look too much like dogs for me Coyotes are also said to be population based breeders meaning they breed to replace the ones that have been killed, but ususally keep a fairly even population if left alone. I don't know if that's true but we haven't hunted ours and the population is much smaller than other farm land I know of that continuously hunt and trap to try and irradicate them. In the western part of our state they are a huge problem and they shoot from airplanes.

We have coyotes all around but they have pretty much steered clear of us.
Coyotes do *normally" go after smaller prey, rabbits, things like that and we don't have much of a feral cat problem here.........
I believe it is their breeding season right now.
ETA: I am in a rural area so they do have a good food supply here, but they are very adaptable. City of Chicago has a large coyote population.

Not sure if the National Geographic episode you were watching was based on a case in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, about two or three years ago. As it happened, I was living in Nova Scotia at the time and the local media coverage of it was extensive: A young singer from Toronto was on a hiking holiday in the National Park and was killed. It seems that the coyote population had become quite brazen around there and had been observed stalking but had not attacked or caused injury until then. Most of the stalking reports were from locals up and 'til the fatal attack. Several behaviourists were quoted as saying at the time that it was likely that the woman became afraid and perhaps tried to run away and in so doing further incited the coyotes to give chase. Sadly there were no witnesses.

Where I live the coyotes are big and ruthless. I do not live in a rural area. I have a client who's dog was chased and attacked inside her own house through the dog door. A few years back one tried to carry off a toddler. I know an intact male Boxer that was mauled to death. They go after large animals. Yes, they're mostly around because of the abundant supply of rabbits and cats and small dogs, but I wouldn't take any chances.

I don't live in a rural area, either. I live in a medium-size city, surrounded by mountains and close to a lot of state parkland. There's also a university campus within the city that contains many acres of reserves.
We actually have (rare) mountain lion appearances, too, as well as bobcats.

This is kind of freaking me out. My youngest son is 9 and pretty small for his age. Where we live is a little boys paradise...
I don't know how comfortable I feel with him being outside alone now. It's not like he runs the woods unsupervised, but he has free reign of the property...or at least he did.
This sucks.
