What is the dog's typical raw meal? What foodstuffs?
I don’t stray much from the following menu:
RMB = Turkey necks or pork brisket bone
Muscle = Turkey or pork
Organ = Beef liver
Additions = Green tripe
Remember that the percentages quoted for raw feeding are based on a dog's ideal weight.
Yes, thank you for reminding me. I sometimes forget my own advice to others. I’m one who weighs at every meal. I recalculated her numbers last night based on the vet saying to reduce her intake by 30%.

Buy a bag of fresh, frozen green beans and add that to the food as you take out some of the regular meal.
Hi Katie, fellow SoCal BARF member! Thank you for your positive advice. I think I’m going to try this.
I don't walk my dogs every day. But I do take them out every day. You're lazy? I am too sometimes. That's the wonderful thing about parks/yards and chuck-its
I will start walking her. I’m going to start slow at about 20 minutes. I didn’t think to mention she also has self-diagnosed hip dysplasia or some arthritis (vet confirmed yesterday by watching her).

I reduced my dogs weight by starting a raw diet. Adding a little water helps.
FYI, shes' been on a raw diet since she was 8 months old. She'll be 6 this May. I'll try adding a little water.

I forgot something.
Of the muscle she gets everyday, 3 ounces is either canned mackerel or tuna which I use to give her supplements. She also gets a little bit of yogurt.

Cathi one exercise that is tremendously easy on the joints or if she has any dysplasia would be to swim her.
If there are any lakes around or swimming pools, swimming is a great exercise for any dog, but especially if they have any arthritis or hip issues.
Also, if you aren't already feeding a good glucosamine product, here is one that I really like for dogs that are dysplastic:

They also have another one if her condition is mild and not as severe:

I have seen a huge improvement in dogs that start taking this, so it is something to consider.

Personally, I find structured walks a bit boring, and I'm kind of lazy too...
But with a dog that is overweight and has little exercise, I would definitely work incorporate more exercise into the day.

This is a great idea too. Unfortunately I live in Los Angeles and there aren’t any lakes nearby. I’ll do some research to see if there are any dog pools in the area. I’ve never heard of any. I definitely wouldn’t be able to take her anywhere for this during the week but it sounds like a fun weekend exercise.
She has been on glucosamine for a few years now. I used to give Synflex but now give the Kirkland brand of Glucosamine 1500mg with Chondroitin 1200mg. She also gets MSM and Herbsmith Comfort Aches for treating the joint condition and the traditional ester-C, salmon oil and vitamin E has been part of her diet from day one.

No doubt I'm going to do something. I just have to figure out how to incorporate something where I can include the other 2 dogs. When I take Nika out (such as yesterday to go to the vet) by herself I swear you would think someone was skinning one of my other dogs alive. He sounded like he was being tortured (which he sorta was) because he was watching from the backyard as we got the collar and leash on Nika and he was left out.

Cathi, her supplements sound stellar, you haven't left out anything!
Do you ever feed chicken or other protein sources besides pork and turkey? The only thing I would change would be to try some new protein sources, unless she has some kind of intolerance or food allergy.

Thank you! This is all thanks to Leerburg and people like you!

One of my other dogs has a bad allergy to chicken so I keep it out of the house. I'm pretty sure I asked on this board before about only feeding turkey and pork because I had a concern it might not be good and I'm pretty sure I came away feeling that it was ok. This is the reason I feed beef liver. It makes me feel a bit better about it.
