Search (type) your State + lost dogs, lost pets, pet recovery, dog recovery and see if there is a FB page, many states have them, also search states that border you.
In my experience with Animal Control (I was an ACO) dogs can go long distances, if they are scared or hurt (I've seen a dog end up 50 miles from home). So I would not only contact the ACO,police, vet in your town but all the towns in a surrounding 25-30 mile area. This sounds dumb but please make sure no humans or animals get bit because if they do and AC find out this dog would have to be quarantined and ALL the animals that came in contact with him... My suspicion is that if he has a grizzled muzzle, is full of ticks, and was a stray that somebody dumped him or just let him loose-its horrible but it does happen.
There are rescues that will take in dogs with behavioral issues, and if this guy was frightened the snapping may just be because of that and may just go away, then again maybe not. I don't know where you live, but my suggestion would be to see if you can find a pug rescue in the area, usually if its a mixed they'll take them, explain how you found this guy and see if they are willing to help. If you can, make flyers and post them around the area, in stores. The newspaper s normally do found ads for free, and watch the lost ads as well, some people will not put any more effort into looking for their dog than that. I had a guy call me once when his husky was missing a month... Good luck.
My animals are not "like" family, they ARE family.
This is day 3 and I think we are pretty much over the snapping thing. I can even lay him over on his back willingly. Carried him to the vet for a scan this morning, into Lowe's with a ride in the shopping cart.
Have spent hours and hours searching for owners that I really don't think exist. My info is out there. I am posting a vague small black dog found on craigslist, they will have to be able to identify his unique characteristics. We are making flyers up this weekend to put up Monday. His owners are going to have to come looking for him. Our info is out there at vets, AC, signs and will be flyers. I searched the lost ads online. If this dog is a lost pet, they can find him through that much info. I really think he was dropped.
I am in looking for new home mode. It will take a bit, plus they will have to see how it works out for them too, so there will be time for a distraught owner to come forward and still claim him. His appt for the no-kill shelter is 2 weeks. I think we will have him rehomed before then. I want to do it quick. He is getting very attached to me, and he doesn't deserve to be uprooted again. if someone is away for the holiday, he will still be here for them to get home, find him gone and find us. if he has a good home, I most certainly want him back there.
I think it is not good he was snappy to start with, but he is becoming a different dog very quickly. Thanks to all here who helped me through that part.
