The best way to learn tracking is from a seasoned tracker.
IMHO, tracking would be very difficult to teach yourself, regardless of how read you are. I could very well be mistaken, and wish that someone who has started themselves would weigh in.
What my trainer did in the first few minutes was invaluable, to me. It didn't take long to understand and apply, but it wasn't at all what I envisioned going in, after only having read about it. The first thing I learned how to do was lay a beginner's track. The descriptions I'd read didn't made it sound like a big deal, but I pbly made three or four key mistakes in the first ten feet.
ETA: IMHO, if you can't recognize the mistakes, you'll be trying to correct them from then on.
