Have to chime in here. My previous GSD was a true long hair. His coat was, richly pigmented black and red, very silky with no undercoat. His tail was like a Collie. Not the breed standard but a striking huge male who attracted much attention wherever we went.
When he got wet he took forever to dry and I brushed him daily. BUT he did not really blow coat or shed as much as my present traditional coated one. People thought I would've been up to my eyeballs in fur, judging from his coat!!!

A fine-tooth metal poodle comb works well for me to remove lots of undercoat.
For my GSD and Corgi (both double-coated big-time shedders), they get a thorough going over with the Furminator once a week. Then I follow up with the poodle comb and am always surprised at how much more hair I get in the comb, even after furminating.
Wendy, I almost wish my girl was getting naked but unfortunately it's not happening. My girl who is not normally a bad shedder is dropping hair like crazy right now. I've been furminating her twice a day for almost two weeks and it's still falling out. She shakes and it looks like a blizzard hit my backyard.
This pin brush you guys are talking about; does it work on short-haired dogs?
Both my outside GSDs are terrible shedders. Aside from the twice a year molt the short coated one sheds constantly and twice as bad as the long coat. The long coat had a tremendous, very thick under coat but the twice a year molt takes care of it.
I've got the furminator, German rake and steel combs. I prefer the steel combs for both dogs.
Both dogs get groomed twice a week but I don't brush from October to early May since they are outside 24/7. No problems with matting but it's a chore every spring when I get started.

wow! twice a day is insane! But with the heat we've had lately im
not overly surpised. I actually have to rake the backyard after our brushing sessions the hair is so bad!

I didn't know about overuse problems. What happens? Failure to re-grow?
I was warned to not use it all the time otherwise it would remove too much of the undercoat. And if used too vigirously too often or applying too much pressure could cause some scraping/scratches.
So not so much that the hair won't regrow, but that you'll get rid of too much of the undercoat so they won't have any left and have no protection from the sun etc.
In the spring & fall is when I tend to really go to town with the furminator. After the initial all out session, i only use it a couple times a week, and I don't go crazy, or apply alot of pressure. I just use it lightly.

Wellll good, it's not just me. I thought I was doing something wrong or that the Furminator wasn't living up to it's billing. When I saw "Reduces shedding by 90%", I thought all my problems would be magically solved.
lol...if only that were true! Don't get me wrong, I love the furminator, I generally get enough fur off Tucker to form 2 other dogs! But those pin hairs! Bah!! They are the bane of my existence! When I use the furminator lightly it works on the pin hairs...but I never get them all. They just keep coming & coming!
