I ended up taking her to the vet, the skin around her hocks and a wrist had swelled (just the skin) he thought it was hives (that had gone to the next level)and put her on prednisone and keflex for two weeks-I'm continuing with the benadryl. She's on a grain free diet and nothing food wise has changed so it looks like this could be a new allergy but to what???

Hives are an intense allergic reaction; they usually show up almost immediately on exposure and often go away very quickly too when exposure does.
Like with other allergic reactions in dogs, food (while possible, of course) isn't the most likely trigger. (I think insect bites might be, but it's been a while since I read up.)
I was thinking of sand fleas.
Whatever the problem Keflex+prednisone +benadryl is likely to cure it!
Perhaps ask your vet for a 'script for these drugs should this happen again on a weekend/holiday.
She was started on the meds Monday, and all the swelling is gone from around her hocks and wrist, she still has hives along her back but is nowhere near as itchy as she was. I'm wondering if she could be allergic to the Advantix, although she's had it on before. All the food she is currently on is grain free limited ingrediant.

One of our dogs had a few occurrences of hives with no immediately obvious source. We finally gave the yard an extra bug spray and that eliminated the problem. We didn't notice any extra bugs and didn't find any scorpions. We never found out what was biting her.
This has me stumped as well, I'm going to change her food to see if it could be something in her current brand, I'd really hate to have to do the allergy testing because its so expensive.
My current thinking is she has a crush on her vet and this was just an excuse to see him, get called "pretty girl" and get some cookies, lol.
