How would feeding DE be efficacious against fleas? I've heard of its use on internal parasites, but not external ones.
DE applied to the dog, bedding, and carpets (and yard) is also something I've heard of. I use it in my chicken house.
Someone here once posted a positive review of a cedar oil spray called "Best Yet" which I purchased--and I can confirm that it works as a good flea repellant. I gave up the search for a totally non-chemical approach however. My flea protocol is now Frontline every three weeks, augmented with the cedar oil spray, plus regular spraying of the house and yard with an insect growth regulator.

From articles I've read saying that diatomaceous earth is effective, I too thought they were saying "internal against internal parasites," and otherwise external, as in putting it where the fleas would be. I don't know how ingesting it could affect external parasites.
I did find a pretty interesting article about it that I will dig up.

I too succumbed to Frontline long ago. Without it, my biggest result was that the dog with flea-saliva dermatitis started a skin infection from scratching that turned into a many-months-long yeast (malassezia) battle. The other dogs were "just" miserable.
I actually have feelings of hatred toward fleas. Kind of pathetic.
Many farmers swear that the stuff kills all sorts of worms in their critters.
Many people eat a quarter cup of food grade diatomaceous earth every day. ... I have found references where it is cited for colon cleansing, parasite control and detox.
But there's MUCH more in the article about external use: what kind, how to, etc.
Yes, you put it on the dogs for the external parasites. Basically, it smothers the fleas that get on the dog. When used on carpets, etc. (we use borax as it seems to work into the nap easier) DE smothers any adult fleas, prevents eggs from hatching and any larvae from developing. Feeding is for internal ones.
Joe, as far as feeding goes we don't really measure it but just sprinkle a small amount and mix it in with the food. Since our dogs are toy breeds, it's probably equal to about 1/2 tsp during the colder season when fleas aren't as prevelant and possibly a tsp. during flea season. Food Grade only of course.

JMO:
There is no reason not to mention up front about tight finances.
As with any kind of health professional, they pretty much offer/suggest whatever appropriate diagnostics exist (IMO). That is, cost is not their driving guide.
If you've expressed financial concern, you won't seem argumentative when you ask what a suggested diagnostic procedure will tell the vet and whether there are alternatives for less cost. Also, whether the results of a certain test will change the treatment protocol.
Sorry I didn't get back right away computer problems.
So the white sheet test was foiled by a bath. I didn't have a white sheet or any thing even close so I went to Target to get one and when I was running arens Zoey ended up getting a bath by the GF.
