I'd owned dogs for 35+ years before I got a dog with some working lines in her. She is not as well bred as those of others here, and certainly not as well as those mentioned in the OP.
I'd spent a week visiting her and researching GSDs before I brought her home, but it was evident to me as soon as I got her home that I was going to have to up my game just to live with her, much less handle her outside of the house. She still requires, and always will, constant management.
would lov eto adopt a dog from the shelter but u have been helping stray or phriah dogs to gt adopted when i was in high school. I wanted to own a GSD since i was a young kid, which i think is my time to own a one and that a very good one.
I am a new bee here and a first time dog buyer then owner. So I decided to come here and seek advice from dog punditz.
I am basically thinking to buy a puppy out of Lord from schraderhaus kennel or a Congo X zara or Congo x fida puppy.
If any of you know about these lines what would you recmmend to go with. Congo Vikar or Lord.
Thank you.
What is it about those lines that attract you?
For me there is no thing as lines. I want a German Shepherd and a very true one close to Horand Von Grafrath.
I wasn't clear on what kind of dog you are talking about getting here so I searched for the Schraderhaus website. Without knowing anything else and just judging from their website, it sure appears like they are top notch. Don't know if that means anything and I'm sure others are chuckling at my ignorance of Schradhaus. However, they are also on the farthest corner of the country from you.
That said, I also have to caution you on your choice for such a serious first dog. What are your intentions regarding training and activities and why from a breeder so far away? How good is your knowledge about dog nutrition, health and behavior?
The only reason I'm posting this is we also took a similar plunge. We wanted to experience a serious breed of dog once in our lives and ended up with a Malinois. We had our hands full but we also had over 40 years of raising and training dogs, mostly mutts and smaller dogs. Don't get me wrong. It's been a great experience and Bailey has been the best dog we ever had but I'm not sure we would be saying that if she was our first dog. I'm not sure we would have had the ability to turn her into a great dog if she was our first. My recommendation is to strongly consider the other folks' advise here about a less challenging breed or a mixed breed first to get you ready for the time you want to take on a more serious breed like a working line GSD or any similar dog. JMHO.
Hello,
The reason i wanted a serious dog because thats what my mom had when i was a toddler. So i have always imagined german shepherd as he was. I am fully aware that owning a working german shepherd would be not easy, but it has been my passion since i was very young. When i was in high school my friends were busy in chatting with girls on internet and i would keep checking websites for all kind of dogs and their heritage and lines. i do have experience in raising stray dogs and know what a alpha pack dog is. thank you for your advice.
