I'm uh...a little to familiar with this situation...though Ryuk preferred open soda cans 80% of the time (though what they lack in large opening at the top they make up for in exploding if you drop them the right way on the wrong kind of floor...something my apartment at the time was full of)....
I found teaching him to drop the cans in a lined trash bin most effective.....it also has a great side effect of teaching the commands to get your dog to put his toys away as well as help clean up after a party....downsides are you need to check your trash bin for cups and you may loose some perfectly full drinkable sodas...
