I am sick of hearing the "working dog" term used for dogs that do nothing but bite a burlap sleeve .. that is not work unless you do it for money. When I go bowling it is play and when a pro bowler goes bowling that is work. Maybe the work part is selling the dogs??

Crapola .. most of the heavy bodied police type GSD would die of a heat stroke herding sheep all day. The founders dogs look nothing like the large headed and heavy shouldered dogs of today. It's all about the money and everyone wants to sell what people will buy. The GSD after WWII started to look a lot more like Rin Tin Tin because that is what Americans (who had all the money) wanted to buy. The Germans had a wrecked economy and nation to rebuild so they sold the Americans copies of Rin Tin Tin as fast as they could make them. German shepherds are German Shepherds and trying to say one is better or worse is mostly marketing and greed by groups that want the highest price.
They aren't working .. if they are I want a cut of their pay checks for rent and food. They are strong, athletic dogs with nice temperament and balanced drives that make good pets and home protection dogs. I have had a couple go into police service but that is more training than genetics. If trained properly they will bite for real and not just a burlap sleeve but so will a terrier. But most are not trained to do anything by their owners other than be good friends and companions.

Where has all this been put to the test? Are these your opinions, or have they been trained to a point beyond just some agitation here and there? More then just taking them out once or twice.

I don't believe one is better or worse, I think they are both the product of selective breeding for generations with a different goal in mind.
When even someone that is relatively new to the breed can look at a picture of a show line or a working line dog and correctly guess which the pedigree is going to be full of, we have two different breeds for all practical purposes.
I do not know that many show line breeders so I am going to speak for working line breeders here. Most breed working lines because that is the dog they love. If they were going to breed a type for marketing or greed, they would switch to show line because the market is much greater and the price per puppy is normally much higher.
Unless you are a large commercial breeder you generally breed the type of dog and look for the traits that you like.

You may not like the term working line or show line but since 99 percent of the people involved in German Shepherds know exactly what is being referred to, what's the problem?
It is normally used to refer to the pedigree of the dog, not if they punch a time clock or not, but you already know that don't you?
