Thanks for the link to that list -- I noticed "Cuterebra" (Botfly) as a possible cause of the lump ... They're becoming more widespread in the USA, unfortunately
Yahoo has a video that can be accessed by typing "intense botfly infestation" into their search engine -- Dogs are definitely susceptible to them, as are livestock, wildlife & even people ... Nasty Monsters !!!

Yes, it would be more unusual than some common culprit, although bot-flies/warble-flies are proliferating here -- And an initial site looks like any other insect or spider bite ... Unfortunately, it's quite awhile later that the hellish Myiasis ensues
